Legacy of Elegance: The Storied History of Cedars Terraces in Clapham, London

Cedars Terraces were designed by J. T. Knowles Jnr. and built by Henry Harris in 1860 on either side of Cedars Road, facing Clapham Common. The properties on Cedars Road were very large and grand detached houses (photo below) built by the local resident and Victorian property developer, James Knowles. They were the first part of what he wanted to be a much larger development that was to go most of the way to the river, thereby connecting Clapham Common with Chelsea Bridge.

James Knowles intended to make an upmarket ‘Belgravia of the South’ to compete with parts of Chelsea. Today, the two large blocks of what were originally these giant townhouses are still probably the largest terraced houses ever built in Clapham or Battersea. This project is one of the last townhouses still left as one entire house, whilst some of the others have now been split into apartments.

“As soon as we walked through the front door of this house, we all fell in love and couldn’t wait to start this project. It really is a rare and special property, the likes of which are rare to see on the market.”

– Genevieve Levy, Director at Knight Frank Interiors.

Embarking on the styling of an apartment adorned with such intricate detailing presents a unique challenge, a dance of complementing it’s inherent beauty without overshadowing it. Check out the intricate details of this property in this video.

Our task involved striking the perfect balance, ensuring that every piece of furniture seamlessly integrates with the opulence, yet retains its individual significance. Our talented designer Saffron spoke to us about how she went about choosing the pieces:

“Working on this project was a truly enjoyable and thrilling experience. Exploring the remarkable features of this property was particularly exciting. Given the contemporary lighting in contrast to the rest of the space, my aim was to carry this modern touch into the furniture selection. This approach proved effective in achieving a harmonious blend of modern and traditional elements. The final outcome is a space that remains warm and inviting while exuding a sense of modern luxury.”

– Saffron Harper-Ward, Designer at Knight Frank Interiors.
